U.S. Single-Family Permits

This dashboard tracks single-family construction permits (not seasonally adjusted). Values are shown as trailing 12-month totals so long-term direction is easier to read.

Permit momentum is one of the earliest signals of where the real economy may be headed next. When permits rise or stall, it usually flows through to construction jobs, local tax revenue, and the pace of new housing supply. That in turn shapes affordability, where families can realistically move, and how resilient U.S. growth looks in a higher-rate world. Even at the household level, this shows up in familiar ways—rent pressure, home prices, and how quickly neighborhoods are built out.
